Weapons Used in Martial Arts
By Tony Hackerott of The MMA Zone - themmazone.net
Students of the martial arts have a wide variety of weapons training to choose from. The techniques for these weapons are taught at martial arts studios, and students can also buy instruction videos to learn how to use martial arts weapons. Competition swords are a popular choice for martial arts training. Special training swords are typically used for anyone learning to use competition swords. Training swords are safer to handle and eliminate many injuries. The student must be conscious of the fact that the competition training swords should match the authentic competition sword’s weight, handle length, blade length, and balance as closely as possible. This results in more consistent training. Japanese swords, or nihonto, are available in several sizes. The most commonly used Japanese sword is the katana, a single-edged, curved sword originally used by samarai warriors in the 1400’s. Two other popular Japanese swords are the wakizashi, a sword that is shorter than the katana, and the tsurugi, a double-edged sword. Ninja swords often have a groove in the blade. When the correct ninja sword technique is used, the groove in the blade causes a noise when the cut is made. This enables the student to adjust his or her technique after each cut. There is a large difference between authentic ninja swords and the less expensive versions. Samurai sword routines are graceful and also powerful. The training for samurai swords is based on four concepts. The first of these is aikido, which is a way of harmony, rather than direct and aggressive confrontation. Iaido, which is the path to self-perfection, and kendo, the discipline of the human character are two more of these concepts. The last concept, yagyu shinkage ryu, involves building great spirit. A sai has a handle, usually wrapped in leather, attached to a pointed baton and two curved projections, called tsuba, extending to either side. Two sais are usually used at one time. Sais are considered offensive and defensive weapons. They can be used for thrusts, stabs, and strikes and also blocks. Flexible rubber sais are used for training purposes. Nunchaku are comprised of two pieces of wood joined at the ends by either a rope or chain. These weapons are usually used for self-defense. Nunchaku experts exhibit great speed and fluid movements in their routines. Beginning students can use foam training nunchaku until they have developed enough skill to use wooden nunchaku. Throwing stars were first used during the 13th – 17th centuries by Japanese ninjas when they were unable to use a sword. These weapons are round with three to ten points and are available in about twenty different styles. The end of the point is held before a throw for short distances and faster turns. Targets are used for practice and training, and the distance can be adjusted when the student is able to throw more accurately.

Oldest swords on record in Japan are the two that were sent as a present to queen Himeko from China during Wei-dynasty in 240 a.d. In 280 a.d. many more iron swords were imported from China to Japan. When the Americans forbade the manufacturing of swords after the Japanese had lost the war. Also about 400,000 historically and artistically interesting swords ended up in the USA. The art of the Japanese sword was on the brink of becoming extinct. Luckily in 1953 the manufacturing of swords became legal again, and the almost dead tradition could still be revived. There were still old masters alive who could teach the next generation. Now there are some 250 working smiths, producing swords matching in beauty and quality even the finest produced in the past.
