Martial Arts Training Equipment
By Tony Hackerott of The MMA Zone - themmazone.net
The various forms of martial arts originated as training for combat techniques. The student must decide which form he or she wants to study as well as the purpose for the training. Martial arts training can be used for fitness training, learning self-defense techniques, or training for full contact sports or martial arts competitions. Martial arts studios and fitness centers offer training in several types of martial arts. Stretching and building leg muscles is a critical part of martial arts training, and a split leg machine is often used for this essential workout. The split leg machine consists of a padded seat at the end of a short shaft. Padded spreader arms are attached to the end of the shaft that is opposite of the seat. The student’s legs rest on the spreader arms. A crank, handle, or steering wheel is used to move the spreader arms out to opposite sides, stretching out the legs. Split leg machines normally have a hand grip located in front of the seat which can be used to assist bringing the upper body further down, imitating positions used in martial arts training. Punching bags between forty and eighty pounds in weight are often used for martial arts training. Both standing and hanging punching bags can be used. Important features for either type of punching bag are height adjustment capability, large kicking and punching areas, and a durable cover. Hanging punching bags should have strong, heavy chains and a weighted, stable stand. Standing punching bags are usually filled with either synthetic fiber or water and are covered with thick foam. A kicking pad is another important piece of equipment used in martial arts training. Most kicking pads are made with high impact foam and covered in reinforced vinyl. Kicking pads are made to cover the abdominal area or the arms. The trainer or assistant holds the kicking pad by the underside handles or hand clasps. The student is able to practice kicks and punches using full force. A pair of high quality martial arts shoes is a must for training. The various forms of martial arts require differing styles of shoes. Any marital arts shoes should have soles that help grip the floor to improve the wearer’s balance. An important feature of martial arts shoes is a pivot point toe, which allows for easier pivoting and spinning and also helps prevent knee injuries. The heel of martial arts shoes should have extra padding for impact protection. They should also be lightweight and have breathable side panels to keep the feet cool and dry during strenuous workouts.
